In Hijama ‘Wet Cupping’ there are 3 main types of cupping that are administered.

Dry Cupping

Fixed Cupping also known as Dry Cupping is used to ‘prime the site’ before Wet cupping is administered. Dry cupping sucks all the toxins, debris and unhealthy fluids to the surface of the skin and prepares the blood to be taken out of the body with hijama. Fixed cupping leaves a localized ‘bruising’, which is not painful at all. Depending on the body those bruising spots do disappear after a couple of days. Fixed cupping can be done anywhere on the body at any time. A cup is applied on the body and a suction pump is used to suck the skin up into the cup. Once the air is sucked out of the cup the cup remains in that area for a certain time. This method is excellent for pain relief and strengthens the immune system.

Moving Cupping

A cup is used with an aid of oil to rub the area. Oil is applied to the areas of the body that is being cupped and deep tissue massage is undertaken. Large circular motions and strokes are applied, moving directly up and down the meridians. This form of cupping is designed to relax and invigorate the client. It is also used to prevent the muscle atrophy and promotes local blood circulation to supply more oxygen, hormones and enzymes to tissue and joints. This method relieves muscular pain by relaxing muscle fibres. Moving cupping can be administered at any time and as much as the client wants.

Wet Cupping

Hijama also known as Wet Cupping and sometimes as Blood Cupping involves the same steps as dry cupping but it takes it to the next level which involves using a surgical blade to make superficial scratches on the surface of the skin under the cup to draw out toxic blood. Wet cupping does not generally hurt. The incisions feel like small scratches and some clients have reported that it just tickles them. Clients cannot even feel the small amount of blood that comes out which is less than a blood test. There are multiple benefits of doing Hijama. Some are but not limited to boosts the immune system, detoxifies the body, helps to cleanse the skin of blockage in the pores, improves blood circulation, improves irritating skin conditions and removes blood stasis.

“Whoever performs Hijama cupping on the 17th, 19th, and 21st day (of the Islamic Lunar month), then it is a cure for every disease”. [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah #3861]
